What Actually Is SPRAVATO® Treatment?
Many people hear the word “treatment” and think of another daily pill. SPRAVATO® is different. It is a prescription nasal spray containing esketamine. You use it alongside your current oral antidepressant.
Standard antidepressants usually target chemicals like serotonin. They build up slowly over weeks. SPRAVATO® works on a different level. It targets the glutamate pathways in your brain. Glutamate is a chemical messenger that helps brain cells communicate. By targeting these pathways the medication often provides faster relief from the symptoms of Major Depressive Disorder.
This treatment is not something you pick up at a pharmacy counter. You administer the nasal spray at our certified treatment center under the supervision of our medical team. This ensures your safety and comfort throughout the process.
Understanding Treatment-Resistant Depression
How do you know if you have TRD. You might be a candidate if you have struggled with depression and tried at least two different antidepressants without significant improvement.
Depression is not just about feeling sad. It impacts your daily functioning and your mood. It can make getting out of bed feel like climbing a mountain. If you continue to struggle despite trying multiple medications SPRAVATO® may be the key to unlocking a better quality of life.
Your Experience at Our Laurel, MD & Alexandria, VA Clinics
Starting a new medical treatment can feel intimidating. We believe in total transparency so you know exactly what to expect.
Your journey begins with a consultation. We need to understand your history. You do not need to come into the office for this first step if you prefer not to. We offer telehealth evaluations for patients across Maryland and Virginia. This virtual visit allows us to review your mental health history and confirm that you are eligible for the treatment.
Once you are approved the actual treatment sessions happen in person at our Laurel, MD & Alexandria, VA locations. We focus on safety and patient dignity.
The Treatment Day
You will come to our office. You will administer the nasal spray yourself under our guidance. Because the medication can cause temporary sedation or changes in blood pressure you will stay with us for an observation period. This observation usually lasts about two hours.
You can relax during this time. Bring a book. Listen to music. Just rest. You cannot drive home after treatment so you will need to arrange a ride. We can even help with transportation assistance questions during your onboarding.
Schedule and Frequency
This is not a daily medication. The schedule typically follows a set path.
Month One involves treatment twice a week.
Month Two usually shifts to once a week.
After the second month we assess your progress. We look at your clinical response. We check with your insurance. Together we decide if maintenance treatments are necessary. Every plan is individualized because every person is unique.
Does Insurance Cover SPRAVATO®?
This is the most common question we hear. In most cases the answer is yes.
Many commercial insurance plans cover the treatment. Medicare covers it. Some managed Medicaid plans cover it too. Insurance companies usually look for specific criteria. They want to see that you have tried at least two other antidepressants and that you are currently taking an oral antidepressant.
Our team verifies your benefits before you start. We do not want you to have surprise bills. We check everything upfront so you understand your financial responsibility.
Costs for In-Network and Out-of-Network Patients
If we are in-network with your insurance your costs are usually limited to standard co-pays and deductibles.
If we are out-of-network you may still have coverage. Your insurance might cover the medication while you pay for the office visit. We can provide you with specific 99205, 90792, 99212, 99215, 99417, 99415 and 99416 so you can check your reimbursement eligibility.
For patients without insurance coverage we offer transparent pricing. The medication typically costs between 600 and 900 dollars per dose with office visits billed separately. We can discuss all these details during your initial call.
Are There Financial Hardship or Payment Options?
SPRAVATO® is a highly regulated, resource-intensive therapy. Because of this, reduced-fee programs are often limited.
Some patients explore single case agreements or employer self-funded plans. Our team reviews these options carefully with patients to ensure clarity and financial transparency.
Safety and The FDA REMS Program
Safety is our priority. SPRAVATO® is only available through a restricted program called the REMS program. REMS stands for Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategy.
This means you cannot take the bottle home. It must be administered in a certified medical facility like MindBodyPinnacle Mental Health. Our clinicians are trained to monitor you closely. We watch for side effects like dissociation or sedation. We ensure you are safe before you leave our care.
